I guess for a lot of people (including me), it was a little TOO awkward. That was the main complaint when the American one premiered and then they softened Michael up a bit. Ricky Gervais is a genius either way.

I found it so dead-pan twisted and no-eye-contact-in-an-elevator awkward as to fall in love with it on first watch. The Americanized version was too banal for me by comparison.
